The organisation has seen rapid growth in recent years resulting in the need to expand the finance team. The Financial Accountant role will report to the Finance Manager.

Although primarily focused on financial reporting and maintaining financial records, this is a broad role that will provide opportunities to be involved in many aspects of the business including taking a leadership role on specific initiatives.

The role also offers opportunity for further progression within the business and possible full time hours.

Scymaris Ltd is based at the Brixham Laboratory site located in Devon, England where specialized laboratory services have been provided for over 65 years. Working in a high-spec facility, built in 2008, we provide high quality aquatic (marine and freshwater) ecotoxicology, environmental fate and analytical chemistry services to the global pharmaceutical, agrochemical and chemical industries. Our goal is to help our clients understand the lifecycle of chemicals in our environment and the impact this has on the ecosystem.

Financial Accountant responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Responsibility for designated accounting and financial activities of the organisation 

  • Weekly bank reconciliations 

  • Updating cash flow statements and forecasts  

  • Maintaining the financial records to assist in the preparation of monthly management accounts, to include: 

  • - Calculating and posting accruals and prepayments 

  • - Maintaining the fixed asset register 

  • - Assisting in revenue recognition calculations 

  • - Reconciling other balance sheet items 

  • Preparation and submission of quarterly VAT returns 

  • Supporting operational team members in maintaining data within the project management platform  

  • Liaising with suppliers to obtain favourable terms 

  • Assisting with sales and purchase ledger duties where required 

  • Ensuring that financial activities adhere to accounting principles, legal regulations, financial controls and company policies 

  • Contribution to ongoing improvement of company controls and processes 

  • Corresponding with customers, suppliers and colleagues by email, telephone and face to face 

  • Other duties as reasonably required 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Attributes: 

  • A strong understanding of financial accounting, processes and controls and how these are applied in practice 

  • Organised, conscientious with a positive drive 

  • Good time-management skills 

  • Excellent internal and external communication skills  

  • A quick learner, willing to get into the detail and learn new skills   

  • Good interpersonal skills 

  • Flexibility and ability to multi-task 

  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail 

  • Team player able to collaborate and support other team members 

  • Confident user of IT and accounting systems including Quickbooks, Xero and Microsoft packages 

 

Qualifications and previous experience: 

  • Good general standard of education (minimum to GCSE standard or equivalent) 

  • 4+ years prior experience in a similar role 

  • Part Qualified Accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA) desirable  

  • Experience in a technical, scientific and/or contract-based work environment would be an advantage
