Ecotoxicology

Scymaris Ltd is based at the Brixham Laboratory site located in Devon, England where specialized laboratory services have been provided to the Pharmaceutical and Chemical industries for over 65 years. We provide high quality aquatic (marine and freshwater) ecotoxicology, environmental fate, plant metabolism and analytical chemistry services to the global pharmaceutical, agrochemical and chemical industries. Our goal is to help our clients understand the lifecycle of chemicals in our environment and the impact this has on the ecosystem.

Husbandry Technician responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • A working pattern to include Saturdays and Sundays with two weekdays off in lieu
  • Daily husbandry activities including food preparation and feeding, breeding, health monitoring and care of aquatic vertebrates and invertebrates as required by Scymaris Aquarists
  • Maintenance of high-quality records for e.g. breeding, health and animal imports
  • Routine calibration of laboratory instruments - pH meters, dissolved oxygen (DO) meters and balances and water quality testing of laboratory supply tanks
  • Sourcing and supply of new vertebrate and invertebrate stocks in support of scientific studies and procurement of lab equipment and consumables as required
  • Ensuring both seawater and freshwater husbandry facilities are maintained to promote health of organisms and optimum condition of working environment
  • Inclusion on an on-call rota with other members of the husbandry team to provide out of hours support in case of emergency
  • Where appropriate, work with others to develop and write SOPs where required, e.g. for new species or new or improved processes.
  • Assist teams during client visits, external audits / inspections.
  • Compliance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP).
  • Compliance with health, safety, environmental and quality standards and procedures.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Experience and confidence to successfully maintain freshwater and seawater aquaria within the present regulatory framework ensuring the highest practical and ethical standards

  • Excellent organisational and communication skills paired with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment to deliver results.

  • Energetic and proactive with a close attention to detail

  • Strong interest in science and environmental issues and willingness to continuously learn

  • Preferably, knowledge or experience of working to GLP (or other quality management system).

  • Strong computer, scientific, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a successful cross functional team.

  • The role is lab based and requires full weekend working (5 days per week, specific days off in lieu of weekend work negotiable), occasional out of hours working may also be required.

  • Qualifications and Experience:

  • Prior aquatic organism husbandry experience ideally in a scientific or technical work environment

  • Educational qualifications. Minimum of a GCSE (or equivalent) in Maths, English and a Science subject (additional qualifications desirable).

  • Experience of working as part of a team where success was achieved by a combination of individual and team performance
